Synopsis:
Operational tours and peacekeeping missions in the South-West Pacific and further afield.
Still Second to None is the sequel to Edward Latter’s book on the first 25 years of the 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.
This volume seeks to cover the second 25 years, and includes a summary of the first book. The 2nd/1st Battalion, based in Burnham Camp just south of Christchurch, has experienced much in its fifty years, both on operations and in more peaceful activities. The book covers operations from a company group deployment on a United Nations mission to Bosnia in 1995 to the complete Battalion on operations in East Timor in 2000. Since that first battalion-level deployment – the first since its predecessors went to Malaya in 1959 – rifle companies, platoons and individuals have served in Afghanistan, Iraq, Solomon Islands, Sinai as well as peace-keeping missions in various parts of the South-West Pacific.  The Battalion has experienced many highlights in its fifty years, occasionally tinged with sadness at the loss on operational service overseas and in New Zealand of members of the unit. A cross-section of the Battalion’s training activities and ceremonial occasions is included as well as explanations concerning dress distinctions, weapons and equipment.  Still Second to None is a definitive history of one of New Zealand’s premier light infantry battalions and is a valuable addition to the bookshelves of current and former soldiers and military historians.
