Synopsis:
For all their intensive training, aircrew were the most vulnerable of forces in World War Two; in Bomber Command the chance of survival was about 55%. What made men volunteer for these roles, and how did they cope with the intense stress of combat? What happened when they came home and were told to forget about the war? Apart from fellow combatants, there was no help available to cope with the transition to peacetime. Wives and children had to live with a husband and father whose behaviour they could not understand. Dr Barbara Smith has drawn on a career nursing such veterans to draw out verbatim stories of aircrew: growing up in New Zealand, their service in WW2, returning to peacetime New Zealand and establishing new careers and families. These men considered themselves to be just ordinary men.
